Last week, we discussed several types of snow removal contracts in Part I. This week, we’ll cover the two more types of contracts commonly offered by snow removal contractors.

Per Push Contract

A Per Push Contract is exactly as it sounds: you pay based on how many pushes occur to clear your property.

Pros: This is a great option if you need to plan ahead on how much a push will cost you.

Cons: Heavier snowfall may cost you more with this type of contract as you may need more than one push. How many pushes needed depends on a variety of things including the duration of the storm, the weight of the snow, along with other factors.

Additional Considerations: This type of contract will involve regular communication with your provider, especially if you experience a longer storm where multiple service visits by your provider are needed.

Fixed Fee Contract

Perhaps the most preferred of the contract options, Fixed Fee Contracts have become increasingly popular in areas of heavy snowfall. This option offers a fixed cost regardless of how many snow events occur. In addition, this type of contract is often offered as a multi-year commitment, rather than a single year, which can help balance the snow removal costs between lighter and heavier winters.

Pros: Fixed Fee Contracts offer your business the comfort of an established cost which can help make budgeting much easier. In addition, many service providers will work with clients to offer a fee that is fair based on previous snowfall rates and data specific to the region. In cases of higher snowfall, this option will save you the most money.

Cons: If snowfall is below-average, this contract may cost you more than a Per Push or Time and Materials Contract. In addition, in cases of extreme snowfall, most service providers will eventually cap the amount of services offered, so unlimited budget protection for the client is not a guarantee.

Additional Considerations: With a Fixed Fee Contract, it is important to make sure the services provided and the price are clearly defined in the contract. Talk with your provider about your expectations before, during, and after the storm to ensure that your property is appropriately serviced. Contract disputes can arise with this type of contract, so be sure you are working with a qualified service provider. Lastly, be sure to understand any service caps that may occur in any given year as well.
