This is How Often You Should Mow Your Lawn

When it comes to checking off your homeowner’s to-do list, making sure you mow your lawn should be a priority for your grass’s health and appearance.

It’s understandable! You want your home to look beautiful, and curb appeal makes a big difference in how your home is perceived. A clean, tidy lawn is very easy on the eyes, both for you and for passers by. Ensuring you mow your lawn will definitely be a task worth putting some time and effort into!

However, people commonly wonder how often you should be mowing your lawn. You want to make sure it’s getting enough nutrients and properly growing, but you also don’t want it to become overgrown and difficult to manage. We get it: finding that middle ground can be pretty tricky.

Take a look at some of our insights on how often you should mow your lawn, and why it makes such a big difference for the overall look and feel of your home.

The Right Timeline

Not all grass is created equally, and likewise, not all grass is going to have the same timeline. Perhaps instead of thinking “how often should I mow my lawn?” change the question around and ask yourself “how tall should my grass be to properly thrive?”

For example, Kentucky Bluegrass can range anywhere from 0.75 to 3.5 inches and see some great health, while Bermuda grass thrives well between 1 and 2 inches. It really depends on what kind of grass you have and what the recommended height is. Once you know that, you will have a better idea of what kind of timeline you should consider for mowing.

Looking for a little more guidance? Consider the one-third rule. This essentially means that you should only cut off one-third of the blades of grass.

You’ll also want to consider what time of day is best to mow your lawn. We’ve found that mowing in the morning, typically between 8:00 and 10:00 AM, is going to give you some great results. You’re still getting morning precipitation while also cutting it in time to let it soak up some sun, the perfect combo to help your grass grow.

Why It Matters

Determining the right height for your grass and when to mow makes a huge difference for your lawn. Why? Because properly cutting your grass allows it to grow more quickly and efficiently. It will make a world of difference.

In addition to consistently mowing, you will want to make sure you’re watering your grass at the right intervals, as well. On top of that, make sure the blades on your mower are nice and sharp. It will save you time and your yard will look fantastic.
